Green Is More Than Just A Color
Increase Font Size Decrease Font SizeWhen I first thought about becoming a green family I started thinking about what it meant to be green. I mean is it more than just recycling? For me and my family the answer was yes. I wanted more out of this green revolution than just simply feeling good about using recycled products and recycling the products that I buy. I wanted my family to embrace the green movement as a whole lifestyle transformation. This is a process that is going to take years!!! However, I knew that it was a process that in the end would leave my children with a strong foundation for a brighter future for the world ( at least that’s my hope).
So what are some of the things that my family is working towards?
-Growing our own produce (or at least as much as we can) We will be documenting our raised garden beds this coming spring and summer.
-Eating locally and organically raised meat
-Cooking and eating at home for 90% of our meals. (This one is going to be difficult a we like to go out to eat)
-Increasing our outdoor activity
-Embracing Re-economy for most of our needs (I’ll post on this topic later)
-Making bi-weekly trips to recycling plant
-Buy a hybrid vehicle (This one will take awhile)
-Make as many of my own cleaning products as I can (I’ll be posting my reviews as I use these)
I’m sure there are more but I think this is a good list. Some of these we have already started doing and others are plans for the future. I’m looking forward to sharing the good the bad and the don’t bother with you as we move forward along this path. If you have green things that you are doing please feel free to share them with me. I know not everything will work for everyone but sharing ideas always helps to gain perspective. Even small steps are still steps in the right direction.

Great list and I can’t wait to see how you do it. My hubby works in an evironmental position and we are always struggling with being green. I think “Nearly Green” is perfect.
The cost and benefits of being green are always being discussed in our household. Organic, not organic? Is it even available in our remote community? Bulk would be nice, but no one sells bulk products here. We have a nice recycling center, so we’re lucky in that area.
Will more energy efficient upgrades to our house really pay off – sure they are the right thing to do, but with falling house prices is it the best choice financially.
He has a small hybrid SUV and I have a Scion. I joke that I get the same gas mileage as he does, but for half the price.
I’ll keep reading!
